Self-Esteem

What is self-esteem?

Self Esteem is defined as confidence in your own worth and ability.

Here's a good definition – and remember, it's something you can build. Just like physical exercise builds muscle and stamina, you can work on building your confidence and learn to value yourself!

It is often based on your opinions and beliefs about yourself, which can feel difficult to change. You might also think of this as self-confidence. Your self-esteem can affect whether you like and value yourself as a person.

Why is self-esteem important?

Liking yourself, for the most part, for who you are is important: because when you have a healthy self-view you are more able to build the characteristics that go with having a healthy self-esteem.

Here are some examples:

  • You can respect yourself as well as others

  • You can have confidence without being overbearing

  • You will be able to communicate your needs and set healthy boundaries

  • You will be less likely to put others down

  • You'll become more self-reliant and resourceful but still be able to ask other for help when you need it

  • Most importantly you can laugh at yourself and not take yourself too seriously
